Computing
Curriculum Intent
At Hallgate Primary School, we have built a computing curriculum which is inspiring, rigorous, and practical. We want our children to be creators rather than consumers of the digital, to develop the skills necessary to participate in our digital world and to be digitally literate. We believe that children’s knowledge, skills and understanding are at their best when embedded into the wider curriculum. It is our aim to create strong cross-curricular links with other subjects, such as mathematics, science, DT, and art (STEAM). This will prepare our children, giving them the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful in later life.
Curriculum Implementation
Computing is a crucial part of school life and learning and it is for this reason that as a school we are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality computing curriculum that uses computational thinking and creativity. We use the national curriculum and the National Centre of Computing Excellence (NCCE) Teach Computing curriculum as a starting point to plan inspiring and engaging computing lessons. We have worked with the Primary Lead with NCCE Yorkshire and Senior Facilitator for STEM Learning to develop and refine our curriculum to ensure we are meeting the needs of our children. Our computing curriculum covers four key areas: Computer Networks and Systems, Programming, Multimedia and Data Handling.
What is the Teach Computing Curriculum?
Impact of our Curriculum
Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in computing that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities the pupils develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They gain a firm foundation of knowledge and skills to see them equipped to take on further learning in the next phase of their education.
Online Curriculum
The online safety curriculum is structured around the ‘Education for a Connected World – 2020 edition’. Education for a Connected World is a framework to equip children and young people for digital life. It was written by the UK Council for Internet Safety and enables the development of teaching and learning as well as guidance to support children and young people to live knowledgeably, responsibly and safely in a digital world.
At Hallgate Primary School we have used Jigsaw, the Teach Computing Curriculum as well as Projectevolve to design an online safety curriculum that is empowering, builds resilience and effects positive culture change. The objective is to promote the development of safe and appropriate long-term behaviours, and support us in shaping the culture within our setting and beyond.
